An ancient ritual dating back to 1460 BCE was found in the ruins of the Ain Dara temple in what is now Syria. Originating from the Hittite Empire, the ritual text is intended to protect the home and family. The ancient Hittites believed that a talisman in the form of a jug, blessed by the sun, would attract spirits that would protect against evil. If the jug broke, the ritual was repeated to restore the protection. The original text is kept in the Vatican archives.
