The prayer dates back to the 2nd dynasty of ancient Egypt. It was often sung in the morning while working to protect the day from harm.

Prayer was included in the rituals of washing babies to protect them from minor troubles. For example, when a child could choke or hit himself, so that it would not have serious consequences.

The prayer was for a long time one of those recited by the son of Pharaoh, who suffered from a lack of attention and often fell and hit himself because of this.
