The original text dates back to the time of the VII dynasty of Ancient Egypt. For a long time, the prayer was read (sung) at sunrise in temples before the start of worship. It was read mainly by priests and those who were allowed into the temple before the start of the actions.

Such prayers were common in many religions of the ancient world and signified the Sun blessing people at the beginning of the day. For example, in ancient China, a similar prayer was used as part of the ritual of morning blessing, which was essentially a ritual of ablution.
