The Heart of Darkness Prayer is a rare ancient Egyptian text dating back to 2730 BC, during the Second Dynasty. The prayer was recited only on special “noble days” to appease fate and remove disasters. During the 18th Dynasty, known as the Thutmosid Dynasty, it was recited at the bedsides of the sick, especially those who were on the brink of life and death, to ensure a speedy recovery.

A fragment of text on a clay vessel was kept for many years in the collection of Gaius Julius Caesar.
