HISTORY OF RITUAL FROM POTAPYCH
A Slavic text of Greek origin dating back to the 16th century. It was quite common in Siberia and was used before going into the forest to avoid encounters with wild animals, particularly bears.
Later in the 18th century, the ritual reached the central provinces of the Russian Empire and changed its original purpose, which was protection from wild animals, to protection from ruthless human behavior.
