HISTORY OF THE BLUE HAZARD RITUAL
The ritual dates back to the 17th century AD. The original texts come from the Sultanate of Sennar, or the Blue Sultanate (due to the traditional Sudanese tradition of calling black people blue), located in what is now Sudan, northwestern Eritrea, and western Ethiopia. The ritual was very popular among the Fung people, whose state was considered an “Afro-Nubian empire with a Muslim façade.”
Later, during the transatlantic slave trade, the ritual came to North America, in particular to the state of Pennsylvania, which became famous for its most brutal measures against slaves. The ritual was often used among black slaves of this state against their enslavers.
